UK Government creates

The British Government has launched a Hydrogen Advisory Council looking at the future of hydrogen. This will be co-chaired by Government Minister Kwasi Kwarteng and Sinead Lynch, UK Country Chair of Shell.

The council is one of a number of initiatives designed to push the UK forward on it’s journey to a low carbon economy by bringing key partners together. A full list of the council will be published following it’s first meeting and membership will be reviewed periodically.

This announcement comes as the PM commits £350m to fund research and technology to cut emissions in heavy industry. £139m of this fund is directly linked to this work ‘by supporting the transition from natural gas to clean hydrogen power, and scaling up carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology which can stop over 90% of emissions being released from industrial plants into the air by storing carbon permanently underground’

The exploratory activities of the Hydrogen Advisory Council and the £350m government investment will go someway to stimulating the UK’s high tech green jobs eco system needed to help cut carbon emissions and tackle climate change.
